View Full Version : SKERRIE BUILDERS: avoid an error

If you are building a skerrie, watch out for a dumb mistake that I made:

When cutting the gains on planks #2, you clearly have the 3/8 " rabbet to reference your correct side (top outside is where your gains must go).

On the #1, which is the garboard plank, there are no rabbets.

Since the garboard planks are asymmetrical, you must clearly identify and mark the TOP OUTSIDE for the gains, or you will cut one of them wrong.

I didn't catch that and cut one on the wrong side, which is to say, the inside top.

I will now be buying a new $80 okume panel this afternoon, ripping it, scarfing it, laying out the ruined plank for pattern, and then properly cutting the gain, which will add several days and nearly $100 to the project.

Simple oversites make for BAD days.
Solution: Measure once & mark, double-check measurements with marked area (mark any mistakes), mark board orientation (i.e. fwd, aft,P & S, inside & outside), then after careful consideration, cut. If all fits celebrate with a wobbly pop :D .

i cut it twice and it was still too short

This is probably a little late, but why not glue a piece of wood into the bad gain and plane it flush after the epoxy kicks?

i thought about that.
i actually went as far as to cut the patch.

however, we are dealing with 6mm okume, which means that the gain cut brought it down to appr. 3mm.

if i patch, then flip the board over and cut the new gain, it will come right down to the glue seam of the patch.

i hope my description makes sense. in other words: it will be too damn thin, i think.

i am willing to be educated on this if other builders thinka patch will give me enough wood to cut the gain correctly, on the exact opposite face, same position, direction into the new patch.

Can you cut off the plank end and scarf on a short piece - something from the scrap/offcut pile perhaps?

Just a thought....

You don't have any scrap pieces when building from a kit :(

I have lots of scrap 6mm okume stuff lying around. Let me know the size you would need and I'll see what I have that will work. No problem sending it to you. Cut a new scarf then glue it up. Be easier than starting the whole plank over.

thank you for your kind offer, steve--i have scraps from one of the other boats i have built from scratch.

i just returned from the store with an 8 ft panel. i can do the layout very quickly; it's the glue drying that takes time.

it's ok--i want this boat to come out well, and a big part of the obstacle was choosing which method of repair.

now that i have done that, i am rolling forward.
