    there's a certain irony

to a pilot schooner being hard aground

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Good looking ship. Guess I don't like how shoally the water is right next to that marker.

Famously designed by Thomas L. McManus for the Mobile Bay Pilot Association, launched in 1926. Retired in 1966, converted to sail training ship. . .

Doubly disturbing given that it's a great looking boat!

I'm not sure why, but pilot schooners have come to be even more appealing to me than the fishing schooners.

Pilot schooners were often returned to port by the cook and a "boy"

I dont think such schooners do much piloting these days.

It does looks like he was on the wrong side of the marker, but she could have spun around with a change of tide.

There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

I'm proud to say that I never ran my pilot sloop aground...
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

When I was on Kelpie, I was often aground at my dock.

I once dragged my centerboard before pulling it up real quick. Does that count as running aground?

No. That's called "touching bottom." See Al Franken for additional details.

A group of folk who started sailing with me on Goblin and then moved to their own cruising sailboats still sail together, exploring thin water. We call ourselves the "Kedgers' Club" based on a very normal activity when sailing with me.

Our motto - "If the seagulls aren't walking, maybe we can sail there."

If we can't kedge off, we use the time to scrub the bottom.

The centerboard is simply a close-in depth sounder. It's not a grounding unless either you are stopped or you at least bump hard enough to scrape past the barnacles and leave a bit of paint.
