I went to a big paper airplane event in Seattle when I visited my parents there in the early eighties. It was in the Kingdome. Folks tried to fly their planes from an upper level of the stadium to some big circles on the playing field. If you got it in you won a prize. Grand prize was a car at midfield - get your paper airplane in the open sunroof and you got the car. It was pretty fun.

The hottest thing in paper airplanes these days is a tiny r/c thing that clips onto your paper airplane and lets you pilot the plane from your phone.

This is my favorite one of all time. You don't need a straw, although you do need a little tape; the beam can be paper folded into a triangular tube. The front circle should be about 2/3 the size of the back one. It flies amazingly well.
