I am darn close to a pedal/electric hybrid. :)

Seriously, I'm only half joking, because the regeneration/capture/recharge/whatever technology is close for a pedal powered device. And batteries are getting smaller and better. I have a friend with an electric pedal trike that will do 45mph for 100 miles with no pedal influence at all.

I'm shooting for a silent go kart to terrorize the neighbors and rail-trail. Hehe.

Peace,

With that kinda $$$ skip the hybrid and just go for this:

See a lot of those here too ;)

Man that is beautiful

Hey Paul do you see the similarity between this Ferrari F2 Berlinetta and The new Vette ?

BIL showed up with one at my MIL's house. He needed to take it for an inspection - grabbed my son and took him for a ride. I don't think he'll be satisfied with anything else after that.

corvette ferrai comparisons will become more ramped in 2019 when chevrolet unleashes a mid/rear engined corvette assault on le mans. . .

dohc 32 valve v8, 600hp
about $80k starting price has been suggested

I want a plug-in hybrid cute ute. Something that can be driven around town on electric only yet just truckish enough to pull a small boat to campsites and launch ramps. But no one makes one.

Sorry Paul to me it looks more Lambo Gallardo than a Ferrari ehhh not impressed yet.
They were going someplace nice with the last one, loose some of the grilles & fins and call in a little Pininfarina and it was becoming more sculptural and proportionate. More Ferrari F2 Berlinetta less Gallardo would be nice. Ya can't beat the price tag though.

Sorry Paul to me it looks more Lambo Gallardo than a Ferrari ehhh not impressed yet. i might agree a bit

except lamborghini isn't a serious competitor in sports and endurance car racing, ferarri is
porsche the more so. . .

think about 3 factory backed rear engined corvettes at le mans, and another half dozen or so private entries - epicness

Chrysler Pacifica hybrid.I took a look. I had in mind something that looks more like this, with a 4 cyl 2.0 litre engine, perhaps

not exactly cute, but certainly precocious. . .

Personally I'm not a fan it looks like a 12 year olds drawing of a Maserati quattroporte with more bumps .

I don't like the fender bumps
I don't like the pseudo BMW / Cheshire cat grill
I don't like the elongated 4 door stance ( Much like I don't like the Porsche Panamera )

Yup - Not a fan

I was looking at used Jimnies just the other day - trying to find something capable of taking a couple of MTBs to the forest. They hold their values well here, 9 and 10 year old, 60,000 mile examples at 50% of new! So I think I'll just get a tow hitch on the Daihatsu instead - same size engine but 5l/100Km instead of 7 for the Jimny.

I just looked at towing with EVs / Hybrids. It seems the main problem with EVs is that range is reduced and there are no public charger spots that have room for the tow vehicle and trailer. For hybrids, that's less of a problem and they tend to be a bit heavier, so the trailer weight ends up a lower percentage of the overall outfit.

hard to believe jim is taking the style over substance view
didn't see that coming. . .Who me? Just the opposite. I want substance over style. I want 4 cylinders not six or eight, because four is all I need. I'm not a soccer mom in the market for a minivan. I want room for two plus camping gear, and seat four in a pinch. i want road clearance and big windows for good all around visibility. And so on. The jimny reminds me of the old rav4s in terms of size and function

way back when they were designed for people like me. I don't think of them as stylish at all. Just functional. Posted a pick of the Jimny because, apart from being all gas, it has the function I want. I called it a 'cute' ute because that seems to be what our macho world of automobiles has dubbed them. I'm not interested in cute at all. The older ones looked like small Jeeps, (except what happened to the rear window?)

I would like to see these older, smaller, very functional designs reborn as hybrids, is what I was trying to say.

And how much extra would you be willing to pay?Good question, Dan. Mrs JimD just paid $30K Canadian dollars for a 2017 Prius. I think that would be around the price point. I don't want a lot of fancy appointments, just a basic economical vehicle with battery storage for 20 miles or so on electric only for getting around town, and then use the gas engine for road trips. Something like that. I think it's the sort of thing that will appear in Asian markets before it shows up in our luxury obsessed Western world.

The RAV 4 hybrid starts at $30 K US. Doesn't have a plug-in feature, tows about 1800 lbs. The plug-in Pacifica gets 35 miles all-electric, tows 3,000 lbs., about $32,000 with the federal subsidy, but doesn't project the image you desire.

The price translates to more like $40K Cdn, and frankly, I hate the direction the rav4, honda crv, and the other copycats have gone. After driving pickup trucks for 20 yrs just sitting in them made me feel claustrophobic. The visibility seemed very poor. Yah, I know, they've got cameras everywhere now, but I'm old and like looking out real windows. And as you say, no plug in, which is impotant to me. I want to take electric power from the grid.
