Ten minutes difference, and Earth would still be Planet of the Dinosaurs (LINK)

Thanks, Sharpie. That's the best article I've seen on the subject.

Nuclear testing in Nevada released known amounts of energy, and left craters containing shocked quartz. By comparing what is observed there with the Chicxulub crater system, we can estimate the total energy of the impact. It works out at the equivalent of 10 billion Hiroshimas.

Yes, we tend to forget that dinosaurs were the most successful form of life, EVER. Without the asteroid, they may have still been at the top of the food chain even today.

Would there have eventually evolved intelligent dinosaurs, though? I think not.

The Earth moves around the sun at 67,000mph. About 11,000 miles in 10 minutes. There would have been no impact if the meteor was 10 minutes sooner or later. But it would have been a terrific show.

But it was a nice article.

"Life is complex", TLT, but you are overthinking it.

Great article, sharpie, thanks for the link.

I've come into the DVD files of a certain Science Fiction/ Science Fact magazine dating from 1944 thru 1990.

Several serious investigations into fact vs. faqble were undertaken, a defense of the Dean Drive was initiated, but one of the more interesting things to follow is the gradual realization that a V.L.Meteor(ite) impacted the (now non-existant) N.W. coast of the Yucatan and not only created the present day Gulf of Mexico, but (in the aforementioned ten seconds) changed the course of life on this planet.

Well, done, J W Campbell!
