War on ISIS: Mosul is liberated.

    The good news is
    1. ISIS is being pushed back with the support from the US.
    2. There will he less people suffering under the brutal ISIS rule and less people fleeing their homes heading to other countries.

    The bad news is
    1. it should never had been lost in the first place.
    2. millions have been killed in the name of ISIS.
    3. in the battle many civilians were killed.

There is alt-reporting that British special forces were heavily involved in the tactical success of the operation. The reporting also indicates that none of the operatives would give a quote or appear in a photograph. This suggests to me that it is the Brits maybe having the good intel on what was going on inside the city.

I love me some Special Forces. Dudes are bearded, buffed, inked, strapped and cruise around in working-man's clothing. They have just the right flavor of amorality. Many have no names except through their direct chain of command. To recognize them for some reason is to put yourself in serious peril.

Edit: This post might be a good addition to the Ed Sheeran thread.

I'm no expert on SF, but I've hauled a lot of SF around, the SEALs seemed to be the most un-uniformed of the bunch. But they still wore uniforms. Army SF, such as the Delta and Ranger guys seems very professional and military.

Don't see many books written by Delta teams...

Here's a 'interesting' Rangers vs SEAL's video. Be forewarned, there's bad words and you probably don't want to watch it at work...

Total fantasy. The problem is not solved... not even remotely.

With a Shia government, over a population that is largely Sunni, the problem will never be solved. Tribal enmities are deep, and transcend generations.

Why don't people realize ISIS is not a town, or a country, it's an ideology? There are no borders, who can't defeat them by just overpowering a city.

Maybe because of the second letter in their acronym?

The point isn't that Mosul is or isn't a happily liberated city, it's that:

                    "I did that."
                    D. Trump

You can see it coming. I propose a "predict the tweet" contest.

That said, it's a blessing that it's hopefully over for the city for whatever respite there might be. The siege reeked of the worst days for Leningrad and Stalingrad. Both of those cities retained their civil populations throughout the torment. I hope the survivors can find some peace with legs.

It's a huge achievement for the Iraqi government and allied entities. They've stood up an army that will fight and get results for it. This has a legitimizing effect.

...and you think this will actually last? ISIS is going to give up? Iraq will be a flowering democracy with peace prevailing?

                          will ISIS give up?
There is reporting that there are 8000 core fighters holed up in Raqaa. It is about to get a lot hotter there. These fine gentlemen will not be giving up.

Somehow, prematurely lording it up as "victory", against a faction the US had a big hand in creating, does not quite make up for the damage done. Whos next, Turkey or Ukraine?
