View Full Version : Acorn 8 flipped
Finally got to flip the boat over. Next I'll cut down the transom, attach the gunwale as well as the lower guard.

Looks good Bill. How are you planning to cut down the transom? Handsaw?.
I'll cut closely to the line with a sabre saw and finish up with a router and a plywood pattern of the radius taken off the plan.

The Acorns are great little boats. Your's looks like a particularly fine job. Congratulations!
Our Acorn 8 is only 7 feet long. We shortened it up so it would fit on deck by setting the station moulds closer together. Here is a testament to it's load carrying capacity.

Hey, I'm looking to build a cradle for my baby who should arive in june..... anyh chance I could get a 1/3 scale set of plans.......?
Wilson,....Great picture! 3 adults in a 7' boat, with plenty of freeboard to spare.
I'm excited to see how this boat will row, but really have no Idea what I'll do with it after I'm done! No doubt will start another boat.
And Shane, the reason the shop is so damn clean is because I had to swamp the place out for 22 people at Thanksgiving,.....my place is way to small for that kind of crowd, so I just built a big fire in the trash burner, dropped the lights down low, and had a party :D . It'll be trashed again before you know it!!!!

stunningly beautiful, WFK! As to the party in the boatshop - that's the way to do it: there's no small talk like boat talk... ;) . Keep posting updates! And merry christmas to all of you out there!

Nice shop! Mine looks just like that. No, really! Um, except it's a little smaller. Well, a lot smaller. Ok - 324 sq ft. But it's that clean. Really! Well, maybe not THAT clean. Er, that's only a little sawdust on the floor. Well, heck. It's a concrete floor so I keep 2" of sawdust down intentionally to cushion my feet....

Beautiful job! I agree with the others, please post more pictures and share some of the details with us.
Can you tell me what plans you used and where you purchased them? I'm going to build a similar sized tender for Tucana and would like to know a little bit about why you chose the design/plans you did. She's obviously beautiful. Were the plans detailed enough and easy to follow?
Great job!

beautiful boat, and I agree on the load carrying
Hey Bill ... what kind of bandsaw is that... it looks nice :D
Vindo;
The boat is an Oughtred design glued lapstrake Acorn. The plans show dimensions for this version or if you'd like to shorten up a bit like Wilson's photo above shows, you can, by simply shortening up the mold spacing the required amount (he gives those dimensions). By shortening up, you can get your planks out of an 8' sheet of plywood. It's gone together quite easily and as of this weekend I hit the century mark in hours. Floors are fitted as well as gunales and lowered guard installed.
Peter, it's a 3 foot bandsaw that I bought from a boatbuilder I worked for after he retired.

Bill, I've always loved the look of the Acorn, but I only have one question, will you build me one then bring it to me? :D
You've done a fantastic job! And that shop! You must be proud to show it off.
