Five months ago I started on the building frame for Iain Oughtred's Fulmar (17' gunter sloop). I'm very excited to say that I'm finally to the point where I can start actually working on boat parts. First on the list is to go purchase some white oak for the stem and keelson. This is my first boat and so far this has been a very rewarding experience. It was quite a rush when I set all the molds on the strongback and something boat-shaped finally took form. I've spent several enjoyable days with a fairing batten tuning the shape. What is it about a fine curve that's so alluring? I've taken a few pictures along the way but it's still just a building frame. When I get rolling on real boat stuff I'll post a few shots for those interested. I don't post very much but I do a lot of lurking. I've learned a lot and look forward to contributing more as my boat takes shape.

Lee, with all the water you're getting there in Texas you sure can use that boat. Hope you're not too close to the flooded areas.

I love the look of these sloops and have thought of building the smaller version myself (Gannet?). Do post the pics as I am very interested.

You must the Texas Lee who posted the Fulmer pics on the Duckflat site (unless there is a big lone star fleet building up), so thanks for those!

Yes, the pictures of the Fulmar on the DuckFlat site are the ones that I posted of a boat built by a gentleman up in Seattle. I've kept up an email correspondence with him and he's been an invaluable resource. I had a tough time choosing between the Gannet and the Fulmar. Both are really cool looking boats but I went with the larger one so that I could take it down to the Gulf of Mexico some day and sail around in some of the protected bays. Now that I have the molds set up I have a pretty good feel for the size of the boat and I'm happy with my choice. It's a good sized boat but it looks like it will fit nicely in the garage when it's done.

As far as the rain goes... I live in North Central Texas (Dallas). Most of the heavy stuff has hit the Hill Country down in the central part of the state (San Antonio, Austin) so while we've received an inordinate amount of rainfall for this time of the year there has been no flooding in my area.
