Since about the time I launched Marianita I've been thinking about a better way to mount the boomkin to her aft deck. My original wooden plan proved weak (and clunky) and the quick fix 1"x 1/8" bent aluminum flatstock bolted to the deck was just a little out-of-place looking for my sense of esthetics. One of my goals for the new hardware was to be able to un-ship the boomkin fairly easily so I started thinking about lashing it on but couldn't find a suitable piece of hardware. After a few evenings of carving, sanding and painting it was time to pound sand and fire up the furnace.

I can never remember whether this is the cope or the drag

Feeder and risers

Pounding sand

Cooling down

Not too bad other than that little dimple on the left

A bit of filing, sanding, wire wheel work and here we go!

Still have to tap some blind holes in the bases to bolt them to the deck and one to run the lashing line through but it feels like it was a good day in the shop. I figure worst case scenario is the boomkin is not as secure as I want in which case these turn into some sweet chocks for my boathook.

Those are nice! Is that greensand you're using?

A bit oily but kept in closed up 5 gallon buckets it has a good shelf life. I've refreshed some of it with motor oil by chucking it in a cement mixer and walking away for a while.
