View Full Version : Do you think it is time to start another war?

A few years ago I declared war on the Canada geese that had taken over our towns swimming lake.
We are winning this war but must remain vigilant.
http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?177260-I-think-we-are-winning-the-Goose-War&highlight=

Well another wildlife species had decided to start acting up.
I bought my wife a bird feeder for xmas and yesterday the squirrels did an organized raid on the feeder, emptying it.
This was a clear violation of the Ohio bird feeding treating established by Moses Cleaveland on July 22, 1786.

I have asked my Generals for options and they can back with
1. Get a BB gun and make an example of a few.
Not a good idea we do not want any martyrs that will increase their support in the UNW.(United Nations of Wildlife.)
2. Get a drone and do a few flybys.
The Generals like this one because they get to buy a new toy but I do not think it will work.
3. Build a wall.
Not sure who will pay for it.
4. Move the bird feeder into the dog zone.
Lots of land mines with the fear to being ripped apart.

Squirrels have got to eat too.

We have been feeding the whitetail deer this week. Walmart sells 50 lb. bags of field corn for under $8.00. The squirrels eat the corn as well.

An hour ago I counted 11 deer in my mother's backyard not 50 feet from where I was seated. :) They are beautiful animals. And when they get territorial about the food, face off, rear up on their hind legs, and bat at each other like kangaroos they are impressive animals.

If you put up an unprotected bird feeder in Northern Ohio the squirrels are going to get at it. Get information from an expert like Angelo Pettiti!

Angelo Pettiti claims to be a peace negotiator but we all know he is an arms dealer who with his garden centers has been supplying both side of this war for years.

Yes! War!

The Emperor for Life proposes a war be started between the geese and the squirrels. I think once the geese get the taste of squirrels, it will be short and bloody.:d

Peace,
Robert

There are such things as squirrel-proof bird feeders.

But missing out on the opportunity to wound squirrels with a BB gun and having them suffer a slow death would deprive a real man of the conquest of nature.

Dunno. Canadian squirrels punch above their weight class. Quite a bit stealthier. And seem to be able to digest much more of what they eat.

Well I made a treaty with my ally the dog and moved the bird feeder into his territory.
This way I can use the squirrels as an opportunity to take over his land.
Kind of like killing 2 birds with one stone.

We had a playground toy when I was a kid that worked on the same principle. Sad that the video cut off before we could see the squirrel stumbling and throwing up.

When my sister feeds her chickens, deer show up also.

If you can't figure out how to feed the birds without the need to kill the squirrels, then stop. Just stop. . .

My favorite method, and a particularly entertaining one: A "slinky."

Given the "damn the torpedoes" mo we've come to expect, I figured it's too late for the geese at this point. But dammit man, we can still save the squirrels!!

Feeds birds yet declares war on Geese?

You see I have been criticized in the court of public opinion that I hate birds because of my war on Geese.
So I started a non-profit foundation to help the right kind of birds.

Not torpedoes, land mines and many innocent women and children have been hit by them.

We stopped feeding the birds. Instead we put up bird houses and we still get a fair amount of birds without the squirrels.

My kids dubbed goose poop "rotten cheesy poofs".

We have a seasonal island we visit, and don't land on, anymore. Rotten Cheesy Poof island it's called...

It's helpful for identification if you name the critters who come to your feeders. For example:
Our chipmunks are "Braveheart," "Genghis," and "Hawkeye."
Our raccoon is addressed as "Stop trying to drink out of the hummingbird feeder!"

Haha!

If you don't know, hummingbirds sing beautifully, and fight viciously. They routinely dogfight near my shaving horse, chasing each other away or toward whatever.

I have a nest I'll have to dig out. Their nests are beautiful.

Squirrels are good eating, albeit indistinguishable from rats once you remove their tail disguise

Lew Barrett has the ultimate goose-poop story of all time.

It's a love story.

If you're good, Lew may actually repost, or maybe find a link to the original.

I laughed until I almost passed out.

Am I not allowed at least one day to joke about it?

Do you really think I think it means anything?

It's funny, and I understood I was meant to have fun with it.

Well the Supreme Leader (my wife) ordered me to move the bird feeder out of Dog territory and back to the garden.
So I decided I will use the slinky method.
I am just trying to figure out a way to get the squirrels to pay for it.

I did move the bird feeder and added a slinky.
Seems to be working, the squirrels can not get up to the feeder.

Thanks for the idea.

I dunno, we have some bad dudes up here. Like this guy, a serial thief, 48 so far from what I understand.

Those squirrels are smarter then I thought.
The slinky just stretched and they are using it like a ladder.
