A very interesting - and sobering - article on the precariousness of the Mosul Dam, whose catastrophic failure is barely being kept at bay. Failure of the dam would have such monumental effect as to basically wash away the state's ability to cope.

Iraq's people are not stupid, but they clearly have been hobbled by years of a political system that has robbed them of initiative. Next spring, the snowmelt could prove to be the breaking point.

Hell of a story. Everything seems to point to an inevitable break without a vastly accelerated program to replace dissolved gypsum with grout. Iraq has been so screwed over.

Nothing to worry about. All the major oil companies have floating drill platforms that can be deployed on short notice.
