Pinball. A P-63 King Cobra built with thicker skin, a bullet proof canapy, reinforced leading edges and controls, armored radiators, and a heavier more durable prop. It was used to train bomber aircraft gunners in target practice, they fire frangible bullets at this airplaneas it made passes at the bomber.

I saw this one recently at Wright-Pat.

Hmm... simulators would have been a popular introduction, I reckon.

Incidentally, I was scheduled to participate in a live fire SWAT exercise 20 years back... armour-wearing police, demonstrating it's effectiveness, with me playing the baddie. Still got 10 years to run on that non-disclosure agreement though :d

Rather an ignoble situation for a quality aircraft that had no place in the line-up. The P-63 had a more scientific wing and was supercharged enough to get the max speed up to 408 MPH and the service ceiling to 43,000 ft. The Free French got several hundred and were still using them when they fought the Vietnamese.
