Hello,
On a glued lapstrake hull (Simmons)the exposed laps of the planking on the inside of the hull are naturally angled in such a way that they will hold water at their low points. Obviously, they are all sealed with epoxy and will be painted but is this just normal or are they caulked/filled in such a way as to shed the water? If they never got wet, it still seems it would be a dirt/debris trap.Anyone here ever treat these to keep this from happening? Seems that over time this would have a tendancy to be an ongoing maintenence issue.
The planking is 3/8 meranti 1088.Could one maybe make 3/8 quarter round and trim these areas?

If the hull is properly limbered I have taken a small plane or chisel to laps like these and made them just off level amidships so they will drain. When you get past the turn of the bilge this may be impractical because of the large cut required and it then becomes a maintenance issue. (sponge it dry!)

Ok,I dont have issue with keeping them dry and I will ultimately keep the water out of them but I dont have any laps in the bilge area.(solid ply panels cover the bottom,no laps) On the Simmons skiff they start a few inches above the deck.If I had thought about this during construction,I may have beveled the reveals to just slightly fall away from the hull sides or maybe have let the epoxy pool there naturally to take away some of the volume that is now to be replaced by water or dirt.I am now ready to paint the interior and was curious before painting to see if there was a neat remedy to this before coverig the epoxy. If I use epoxy on it now then I will have to wait a week for it to cure and sand etc.
