View Full Version : The Round Pond Parade!

Round Pond is a speck of a village, beautiful in all aspects and located on the quintessential 'Maine Harbor' populated by perhaps a 50/50 blend of pleasure boats/work boats. However, due to it's location on the West side of Muscongus Bay on the Pemaquid Peninsula, it is a bit off the beaten tourist track.

Each year, they have a Fourth of July Parade.

Not big news, virtually every town in Maine has one, and most are nicely filled with local high school bands, Shriners in go karts, antique cars and fire engines, all designed to not offend anyone.

Round Pond's is not that sort of parade. Every and any point of view may be presented on a float, in a group or simply as an individual carrying a banner. Virtually every current political or social situation may be supported or opposed here with no one's feathers getting ruffled and everyone being amused. Amazing, I know.

Here are a few of my favorites, but my camera didn't come close to catching the true essence of this classic first amendment event.

It's small town, kitschy but not tacky, and on a beautiful, breezy, dry summer's day there's no better place in the world to be.

Got any reports from the rest of small town America?
