A battle ship? Whose? I knew a volunteer at the Museum of Yachting in Newport that as a young man, 21 or 22, was the master of a freighter that made the Murmansk run three times, and survived.

That reminds me of a Nautical Research Journal some time back of how we salvaged Maine from Havana harbor. They built a huge cofferdam around her, drained it, patched her hull sufficiently enough to float, then towed her offshore and sank her, flying a huge American flag.

My father, seconded to the Royal Navy, did several Murmansk convoys on an escort destroyer before transferring back to the RAN. His biggest memory he said was ice over everything and knocking it off with sledge hammers.
