I recently learned that an artist earned several hundred thousand dollars for this: "My Bed" (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Bed)

Followed by a couple of high school guys who did this: "Eyeglasses" (http://www.boredpanda.com/art-gallery-glasses-prank-tj-khayatan/)

I can't tell you what art is, but I know it when I see it.

Yeah, 'I know what I like, and this ain't it' is not an argument for or against Art, spelled with a capital A. A lot of Art that makes the news misinterprets Marcel Duchamp, in particular his ready-made items, and is met with such hostility as yours, and I don't blame you.
Call me a fascist, but if you want to understand Art, you need to speak the language, and to do that, you have to learn it, and that means a lot of reading and looking through at least the last 175 years of museum exhibitions arguably a while before Turner up to 1995.

There is also this factor to consider; more people graduated from art degrees and PhDs last year than existed in all the countries during the entire Renaissance period. With that many people all clamouring for gallery space and jostling for publicity inches, it is sadly those that clamour and jostle the most who obtain exposure and so enter The History of Art. Stunts and shock art will get exposure. It's not intelligent, skilful, creative or embued with content, ideas or social comment, but it will get exposure nonetheless, exactly for those reasons.
