HAVERHILL — Police said they have arrested a 16-year-old Haverhill boy and charged him with shooting two people at Swasey Field on Saturday.
The arrest happened Monday at 8 p.m. at Temple and Reed streets in the Mount Washington area where the field is also located, police said. The boy was arrested by Haverhill police and members of the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.
The boy was charged with two counts of assault to murder while armed, one count of carrying a firearm without a license, one count of carrying a firearm without an FID card, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. He was also arrested on a default warrant out of Essex Juvenile Court for possession of Class D drug with intent to distribute.
Police said the shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups. Police Captain Pistone said the boy is known to Haverhill police for being involved in gang activity and has a gang tattoo.
The shooting halted a youth baseball game at the field, which received $2 million of improvements in the last three years. Officials of local youth baseball leagues have said they will play no more games at Swasey this season because of the shooting
