Not a very big quake (big enough) but it did knock over an apartment building. Being early in the morning people were in bed. They're still rescuing people...

Thought the pics of the collapse looked 'wrong'.
The empty cooking oil cans probably didn't appear on the construction plans...

Might one construe that construction standards were not as they might have been in an earthquake zone?
That grey building looks like it might have been made of cardboard.

Not only but also, inspections may have been lax.


The article is interesting, I've never heard of a bank denying a loan like that before.

Not a terribly long time ago, Taiwan had a limit on high rise construction. If I remember correctly, it was five stories. I realize that construction techniques have changed, but the new rules should be followed, there is a tendency for corruption in the Far East.
