Anyone have any comments on a Central Machinery 14" bandsaw, model 32208 (from Harbor Freight). Guy offering a "almost new" one for $150.
Thanks, Ed

I dont have much faith in most of the stuff that outfit sells. Why is the owner selling it?- THAT MAY ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.

Don't do it! A friend made this mistake and the machine is now in the landfill... literally! The Delta 14-incher is THE benchmark and widely available used. The new unit from Grizzley (sp?) costs ~$350 and is getting RAVE reviews in the woodworking mags.

Try it, you can always sell it to the next guy. I have a friend with one, in fact he's bought a lot of the Central stuff. The original bandsaw motor was too small, and burned out in short order. With a new motor, it seems to work alright, but it's hard to set it up to run true for resawing. But, he says it's OK for cutting small stuff and the ocassional curves.
I have a 16" Griz, almost 500 lbs of iron, a past reviews favorite, very sweet. The new 14" is quite a buy if you want to get in that deep- could be there anyway if you have to get a motor for the lesser saw.

I wouldn't trade my 50 year old Delta for all the tea in China.I have read reviews which stste that the Central needs major tuning to provide decent service. Find a Delta!

While I personally wouldn't purchase a new HF bandsaw, their 14" is a decent saw for the money. On several wood working forums some folks have souped them up with link belts, better blades (a MUST) and other enhancments.
However a "like new" used one probably isn't worth more than about $100-125. A new one can be purchased for about $220 when on sale. My $.02 worth.
Personally, I bought a JET 14" and think it's a great machine. For me, it does the same job as the Delta (also a great saw) for a few hundred less.
If I didn't have as BS and found one like you described, I'd go for it. Think of it this way, a C-note (+/-) doesn't go far anymore, so any kind of halfway decent machine is worth that. If you don't like like it, sell it to someone else for $100. You'll get your money back.
