One those odd little factoids I find so appealing:

For that matter why do we have useless appendages like the appendix?

We're the Only Animals With Chins, and No One Knows Why
Not necessarily so, Elephants also have a chin. https://www.thedodo.com/community/FrontierGap/elephants-humans-chins-1078264395.html

The Appendix is left over from our herbivorous ancestry, just as baleen whales have three stomachs.

It keeps spillage and drool from dripping on my shirt...and tobacco juice.
Seriously, the lower jawbone would be damn flimsy and subject to breakage without that strong boney chin.
I'm surprised it's a scientific question.

I confess I was thinking the same.

Neanderthals did not have a pronounced chin. I doubt that their faces were fragile.

Yet they are all dead, except for a few on this forum.
Hell, I call them Troglodytes.
There ain't a dime's worth of difference in a goldanged Neanderthal and a goldanged Troglodyte and a goldanged Republican!

Bottom of the face has to end somewhere. May as well end in a nice turn of bilge type shape, no? There are some "chines" that are harder than others. ;)

This seems like a great thread for a tea party joke.
