Watched this on Netflix last night:

It's a documentary about the "debates" between William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal that ABC aired during the 1968 Republican and Democratic national conventions. It is a fascinating look at the birth of the culture wars and the role of the media in them. It's the foundation upon which all Bilge political threads are built. Hard to believe that they were almost 50 years ago.

Highly recommended!

The third of the era was, of course, Norman Mailer. For Mailer and Buckley, who actually came to respect each other and both of whom loathed Vidal, see http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?196107-Buckley-v-Mailer&highlight=Gore+Vidal+++William+F+Buckley

What a loathsome trio. I despised all of them. I always thought their various debate combinations were a freak show.

Does anyone still read any of them?
