The have an excellent reputation. I've never heard any complaints. (I have a gas Westerbeke) Top of the line marine engines. Marketed as the Bukh in Europe, I believe.

Is there a particular engine you are looking at? Or horsepower range? What kind of boat would you put it in to? Each engine brand has it's pros and cons.

Good Fortune has a W54. I've found her to be excellent, reliable, and reletively easy to maintain(depends on installation).

I have had Westerbeke engines in two sailboats and they were excellent. Sabre, quality sailboat manufacturer used them in all their boats; don't know whether they still do. I think today, Kubota either owns Westerbeke or vice versa. The quality of Westerbeke engines has historically been very good.

I had a Westerbeke 20 in Magic and it's reported to be fine at age 20 years. I believe that engine was a Mitsubishi at heart. Were I to look for a small diesel engine today, i'd be influenced by Yanmar's broader distribution.
