Can anybody reccommend a good book on this designer? In or out of print? Especially looking for information, plans, and pictures of his ocean racers.

I believe the book you want is Philip L. Rhodes and His Yacht Designs by Richard Henderson. I think this is the book I looked throught quite a few years ago and if it is it had quite a lot of information about his designs in it. I don't remember just how much detail it gave on the various plans, but I think it gave a fair amount. I was able to find my father's boat (one of his lesser designs..the 23' O'Day Tempest) and as I recall they had a profile drawing for it tucked away in the back of the book, and that they had considerably more information on the bigger and more famous yachts he designed.

It is, of course, long out of print, but maybe you can get a copy through inter-library loan, or if you've got plenty of dough, pick up a used copy.

Thank you Bruce, I checked a couple of the online booksellers for that book and found one for sale. $307.56

I think I'll try that inter library loan deal out

Abe Books (http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?y=11&tn=Philip+L.+Rhodes+and+His+Yacht+Designs&x=65) does list a copy for $125, but even that is a bit steep...

Don't forget that Mystic Seaport has the Rhodes plans. The folks there are very helpful; you can spend a pleasant time there browsing the catalogue. I bought the complete plans for my Rhodes Ranger 28 there and study them frequently. Ben Stavis has an informative web page featuring the Rhodes 41 and other Rhodes designs. Google will get it for you.
