If I were asked to skipper MERLIN across the Atlantic I would demand that the rig be seriously reduced for the crossing; send down the topmasts, a much shorter main boom, remove (?) the bowsprit, make the foresail lose footed, and stow that main stay sail.

She's quite extreme in the ends isn't she, but that would mean she could have a shorter boom and bowsprit and still balance. I bet that happened to her when she dropped out of racing and became a cruiser, she'd still be very pretty like that.
