View Full Version : Is 8mm chain the same as 5/16?

I am considering purchasing a used anchor winch that is made for 8mm chain. Is our 5/16 chain a direct equivalent size or will another easily gotten size work better? On the manufacturers
website they mention 5/16 short link chain. Is there a high tensile chain on our side of the great water that will work?
Thanks,
David

The steel is the same thickness - or close enough for no never mind - but there are three major link sizes. Boat gypsies are fitted for one of the two shorter links sizes and the really long links are not good for anchor rodes. Google about for a chain web page or look at chain specs in one of the better boat catalogs for details and compare with the space in your gypsey.
My first gypsey was fitted for BBB, the shortest link size, and I had regular link high test. SO the links would not lie down in the gypsey properly and every 5th or so would skip. Had to get the right gypsey.

*** incoming message from the Metric world ***
According to my conversion table, 1" equals 25,4 mm.
If 7,93mm is close enough to 8mm, 5/16" is the same as 8mm... :D
*** message end ***
:D :D :D

I reread your post. Sounds like BBB will fit. Don't get any chain until you have the windlass and can match chain to gypsey. This assumes that the windlass is by price or quality or apearance for your boat superior to stuff available here.

Listen to Ian, he is right about the gypsy size being all important.

I'm not sure that metric link lengths match SAE link lengths. I wouldn't buy it untill I was sure I could get metric chain to match the gypsy, or a new gypsy to match chain I could get.

I wouldn't count on it fitting. My limited experience, backed up by warnings I've read, is taht even chain from different MANUFACTURERS can have problems. Which is to say, if you're spending major bucks on chain, and more yet on a windlass, it's worth bringing 2-3 feet to make sure it will fit the gypsy perfectly. Personally I'd be hesitant in buying 8mm unless I could check it on my gypsy. Skipping chain is a pain in the ass, especially since it always skips and jams just when you're trying to weigh in a hurry.

Thanks Gents, for your good ideas and suggestions. I found great chain specs here 1st Chain Supply (http://1st-chainsupply.com/chain/g40_windlass_chain.htm)
Calling the winch manufacturer got me the word that it was built to fit 5/16 HT or High Test. HT is rated for a working load of 3900#, twice that of either BBB or G30. Seems like the stronger way to go.
So, I'm a happy man, I bought the Maxwell 800 vertical drum winch off Ebay and look forward to mounting it.
