View Full Version : Replacing joints glued with Weldwood Plastic Resin
40 years old wooden boat was initially glued using Weldwood Plastic Resin. The first glued joints have started to separate. Need to change all the joints and looking for the best way to take the boat apart - disconnect the glued joints that still "work" without damaging the boat. Any advise?
Thanks,
Wieslaw

If it's the yellow-orange plastic resin mixed from powder and water I'm familiar with, it's brittle with mediocre-moderate water resistance.
I have used boiling water with some success, and also heat and shock - heat gun followed by rubber mallet.

Hot knife (like a putty knife, the handle well insulated) might help.

What is the boat and what are the joints?
This is a Thistle - 17 ft open dinghy constructed of molded plywood, with centerboard trunk, seats and gratings.

What hull number is your Thistle? I just started taking apart #1284 for my winter project. Good Luck!
