A hybrid (kluge) wood and steel workbench for the cost of a doug-fir two by twelve. And it doesn't move, and it doesn't rattle and shake. This is actually important for than just the aesthetic value; if your bench moves when you lean on it or pound on it, every stroke loses energy in the shaking. That means every stroke with a tool is inefficient, and costs time and energy and precision. The difference is noticeable; the work to make the change very worthwhile.

I find planing an edge difficult if the board isn't supported under it's whole length. Even when it is.
