I always referred to the Makita 16 inch circular saw as the "beam saw"

don't own one, but I rent one a couple of times a year from the rental joint down the street.

Anyone ever use one of those vertical chainsaw attachment thingies for a circulr saw? I unnerstand they work great for timberframing. Could be right handy cutting big ships timbers. Those Monster Makitas and their bretheren give me the heebeegeebees just considering them.

Kermit, I used one of those one time while framing a house. We had very large beams to cut. It worked really slick, can't remember the name of the mfg though. You need a heavy worm drive saw to drive it. Seems it had a depth of cut of about 18", I think.

I think Prazi makes the chainsaw attachment for a worm drive skill saw. I built a small timberframe building (20' x 40') with all hand tools. I cut all my timbers(8" x 8"'s, 8" x 12"'s and 4" x 8" rafters) with a japanese beam cutting handsaw. This thing is so sharp and the teeth so aggressive that an 8" x 8" would cut in just a few minutes. Green eastern hemlock. Had that pumpkin smell :D
