I stumbled across a Brinkman Rebel 2 "D" LED flashlight at Wal-Mart. It is shaped like a "D" cell Mag-Light except the bulb head is larger. There are 4 LED's in the head. Rotating the head switches from 2 to 4 LED's. Pretty neat so far. 2 "D" cells last a long time with Krypton bulbs so the LED based light should burn a really LONG time. It gets better.
Like some have said before, LED's aren't the best thing for seeing. This flashlight (or the reflector) throws a useable beam. I field tested it through a stand of pine trees on a dark night. I didn't bump into anything. A very useful flashlight. It gets better.
The unit comes with a removable RED filter. I was able to read a newspaper with the red filter on the same dark night as my pine tree stroll. Really nifty, Eh? 2/4 LED's, 2 "D" cells, Useable beam, RED & Blue filters. It gets better!
$19.95 including 2 alkaline D-cell batteries and 2 filters.

I knew someone would ask that question. The packaging said "Water Resistant". When I verify that my local Wal-Mart has a replacement on the shelf, I'll dunk this one and see what happens. On the other hand, I have several really waterproof flashlights including a floating 5-LED strobe/flashlight that Mrs. Santa paid a small fortune for and a 3 cell Mag-Light. Shucks, I'll keep the Brinkman in a zip-lock bag. On my boat this light with the red filter will be perfect for chart reading and compass illuminating.

Santa brought me an LED headlamp. Two whites or one red.Its supposed to last 50 hours on some AAAs.It's bright enough, but I highly doubt it's waterproof.
Having light where ever you look is easy to get used to.

I have a STREAMLIGHT (http://www.streamlight.com) in the 3-c config and I love it. It's LED and bright and waterproof.
I also recommend SUREFIRE (http://www.surefire.com) for the best flashlights, led and otherwise, that money can buy. All waterproof, many shock proof.

The guy I take tactical shotgun training from has a Surfire light on his 870. Cost him over $300  but it's pretty spiffy.

Gentlemen,
Waterproof does not matter. Waterproof just means that it will work when it is on the bottom of the lake that you dropped it in. This does not do you any good if you can't retrieve it. The real question is "Does it float?"
Keep the keel down and the mast up.

An associate of mine has been buying LED flashlights of of E-Bay for quite cheap! I saw one the other day that he only spned about $5 on and it is water resistant and aluminum. He has done a test on battery life; it ran for over 400 hours continual use! smile.gif
I can't steer you to the direct link, but search E-Bay. This particular fellow had every imaginable LED light there is to be had, including a head-mounted light! smile.gif

However, it might pay to keep an eye on Surefire. There are some shenanigans going on between them and their dealer network regarding pricing. I would not be surprised if some pressure from the marketplace causes their prices to drop to a more realistic level. Whatever you do, don't buy the light from their website. But they do have a great deal on cr123 batteries--less than a buck apiece last I checked.

More than you probably ever wanted to know about LED's and LED flashlights, including some bruisingly honest independent reviews: The LED Museum (http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/).
The Brinkman "Rebel 2" get's 3.5 stars (of 5) and is tested as NOT waterproof.

What I want is a Turtlelite II: virtually indestructible, it is weather and waterproof, and it floats! Uses 4 AA batteries and gets 5 stars! $28.

Meerkat,
Does the Turtlelite have a red filter???????????
I also agree that waterproof, for the use intended, isn't critical. Nor is floating critical. The Brinkman will be used at night for compass/chart reading. Secured by lanyard. If there is enough water inside the boat to float any flashlight, I will have more serious problems to worry about.

NightStar. Doesn't need batteries. Shake it to make the little magnet go back and forth. Not REAL bright but good enough to go for a walk in the woods. Or keep in your (vehicle of choice) for emergencies...
Gave one to my brother, best friend and Mrs. gave one to ME!

I don't know if the Tutlelite has a red filter, but red gel filters are not hard to come by.
