I've just been made aware (thank you seanz) that New Zealand has been soliciting design suggestion for a new national flag which will be chosen in a future referendum.

a few of my personal favourites:

silver fern crossed with the isle of mann

I learned on a recent trip that Fiji is also getting a new flag. The available choices were displayed on road signs ready for a vote in the near future. I hope design 54 gets it.

Of course this leads to the question, "Did Dictator Frank learn this diversionary tactic from our own Teflon John, or is Key taking the lead from the dictator he loves to hate?"

In NZ, a committee will whittle the submitted designs down to the best few (6 I think) and then there'll be a referendum on which we prefer, and then a second referendum to either adopting the chosen new design or keep the old one. The whole process is going to burn $26M of public money, and the general consensus seems to be save the money and just don't bother. As a result, most of the designs being submitted are either entered as primary school projects or by cynical protesters looking to de-rail the process.

See, other countries do it; get a new flag. I think ours should be more "fashion wear" oriented..... maybe something in plaid.

Until IS came along that was surely a frontrunner...now it's "OK for supporting teams, but a not a good look as a 'National' flag."

The government is spending $26million on this exercise. Personally I think it is a waste of time, unless it is tied to the question of how New Zealand might move on from having the Queen as head of state.

Hundertwasser referendum.
Demonstrated a good lesson in how to do a referendum to get the outcome you wanted. Pose 3 options. 1 for and 2 against. Them when the for gets gets 51% claim a landslide victory as it was 20% more than the next alternative.

Re flag debate, when it started I was all for keeping our current flag but have now changed my mind and would like to see something that will differentiate us. How often is our flag confused with that of the west isle.
Bugger "is" righting off the option of the silver fern on black. Our equivalent of the Canadian maple leaf.

I'm not up to speed on this Zane, what's the argument against the silver fern on black?

Similarity to Daesh's flag

TomF

Similarity to Daesh's flagVery good point. Change up the colour scheme though, and perhaps. Here's my vote to use a simplified, unique NZ plant icon though, and maybe the southern cross.

When Canada sought a new flag in the 60s it prompted huge controversy. The conservatives among us railed against the perceived disrespect to heritage, to veterans who'd fought/died under the predecessor flags, etc. But a simplified maple leaf represented something which most Canadians saw daily, identified with where they lived, and had a historical cachet which didn't point anywhere else.

By any measure our flag's been a success. The flag's simple, with no confusion to any other. The icon itself is readily excerpted, dressed up into a formal insignia or down into a cartoon, always retaining an immediate association with the flag and the nation. A real triumph of not only of "branding," but of nation-building.

You've got this one upside down. It's actually an Asaphus Trilobite.
