Fellow Aussies will no doubt be interested to learn that Steve Smith's fair-dinkum, genuine, brook-no-substitutes CPES is now being distributed right here in Orstrylia.
Sole distributor for the whole of Oz, including that little island on the other side of Bass Strait (and Keeling Island and Norfolk Island and others too, I suppose, now I come to think of it) is --
Timbertech Trading
PO Box 4959
North Rocks NSW 2151
Phone: 0413 088 990
Fax: (02) 9873 2278
Email: timbertectrading@aol.com
Among the other nice things about CPES is the fact that it comes in good old one-pint tins. (Okay, they're Yankee pints, but that's a whole lot better than 473 cubic kilojoules or whatever units they use in that cock-eyed European system.)
Tony Hunt's the bloke to talk to.

Yah them kilojoules . . . I was trying to explain to my wife just this morning how the old Oz currency system worked -- which I learnt back when a thruppenny bit would buy something. I never figured out the guineas part, but I wasn't that big a spender then anyway!

This is a 'big turn' in the match now.
Thankyou Mike, well played. Thankyou all for being here. Thankyou Linesman and thankyou Ballboys.
Wait until I get my hands on this stuff. I have only just been weened off Penetrol. How much do I need per hectare. What's the coverage?
Warren.
ps, CHANGE ENDS GENTLEMEN. NEW BALLS PLEASE!
pps, TPRDA (BoatCraft's stuff) goodbye my toxic enemy! It was not nice knowing you.

Hi PW, the currency was like this. Other Aussies may have even used LSD, . That's what it was called.
1/4 of a penny, a farthing, or a 'bit'?
1/2 a penny, halfpenny, or a 'slug'?
1 penny, a penny
3 pennies, thruppence or a 'trey'.
6 pennies, sixpennce or a 'zac'.
12 pennies, one shilling, a 'dena' or a 'bob'.
10 shillings, 'half a quid' or '10 bob'
20 shillings, one pound or a 'quid'.
21 shillings, one guinea (I don't know the slang).
5 pounds, a 'fiver'
10 pounds, a 'tener'
I think that's how it went. Do you have a 1930 penny?
Warren.
ps, 'Spend a penny' and buy a fleet.

You forgot the florin (twenty four pence), aka "two bob" and something else that I can't remember. Is it possible that the florin was also known as a deena?
There was also the sovereign - a gold coin (I've got some of these, but no 1930 penny - thought about buying one a few years back and went close to doing it to complete the set).

Well, goodonyer Chuck - -some friend you turned out to be,,,, Why didn't you tell us, you silly b,,,,? You could have saved me a bout of writer's cramp.
Warren, I have to agree with you about TPRDA -- better than nothing, but not much,,,, Penetrol's not bad though, is it?
Ian, were you thinking of a crown or half-crown? These were before my time, but I remember my father talking in half-crowns quite often. (A deener was a shilling, by the way.)
PW, for your wife's education and edification, get her to have a look at http://media5.hypernet.com/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=002850&p= where "strange currencies" got a pretty good airing.

Nope - definitely thinking about the missing 20 cent equivalent. Given I was 11 when it went out, I should remember it. Bloody Alzheimers!
At least I got in a few hours on the boat today.

IG, In those days I did not have, "two bob to rub together", my Uncles would say this. I can say it too.
Apart from 'bucks' I don't hear nicknames or sayings like this any more for Aussie money, although I hear 'Greenback' and the 'Fed' and 'nasdaq' a lot.
