Ok, so call me clueless, but nearly every group, topic, & thread on this forum urges for more photos, which seems to ask for easier ways of posting photos. Is the host listening? Would the average user happily blow past a couple of pop-ups if those ads funded a server to make photo posting easier? Curious.....

Once you get it done it is quite easy right now.

Absolutely, although I have trouble with flikr. But then I used Photobucket so that is all right then.

Yes the recommended Thorne method is for the technically proficietn and gives superlative results. Use the JimD method

right click>.copy image.>quick reply box>right click>.paste (you cannot resize or anything, but it's quick and easy.)

Yep, there are a gazillion ways to do it. It all dependd on your computer's OS, Browser, version of same, image hosting site, etc. There are interface mods you can make in the Forum's _My Profile_ settings that further complicate things.

But if the basic method above won't work, my procedures will work -- every time.

Here's how to post photos on this forum:

FIRST - Don't attach photos. Only a tiny version will display.

SECOND - Post the photos on the web. Use your own website or a free image hosting service like www.flickr.com, picasaweb.google.com, picturetrail, photobucket, shutterfly, etc. Facebook is not recommended the image URL is changed after a few months (breaking the link), and images must be set to "Public" access via the Edit option, not limited to "Friends".

THIRD - Once posted on the web, right-click the photo to "Copy Image Location", or drag the photo to another browser window, then copy the image URL (web address) which will end in ".jpg". You can test by pasting the photo URL into the location field (http://* ) of a web browser and see if the photo displays. Remember that this process will not work for photos located just on your computer, on members-only Yahoo groups, or on Facebook unless set to "Public" view.

In Flickr - First click the photo to bring up the options on the right, click the downward arrow icon on the far right ("Download this photo"), then in the list that appears click "View All Sizes". Select the size you want (if not the default size displayed) then get the image URL by right-clicking the image.

FOURTH - DO THIS EVERY TIME TO POST IMAGES IN THREADS:
A. In any "Reply" window you can click the "insert image" icon --> a little yellow square icon with a dot at each corner, a tiny tree in the center.

Depending on browser version and Reply/Edit status, this may bring up a simple window with a field to paste the URL into, or the "Add an Image" window described below.

B. If the window titled "Add an Image" comes up, click the "From URL" tab, paste the URL of the photo in the field, deselect the box for "Retrieve remote file and reference locally", then click the "INSERT IMAGE" button. The Forum software will resize some large images, so look at your post to see the actual displayed images.

NOTE - most common problems are due to missing the step described above -> deselect the box for "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"

Depends on what you're using to access the Forum, and where your images are hosted. You might have to use a different hosting service, and/or use a browser to access the Forum on the iPad. Give it a shot!

This made my day. On multiple levels.

We should arrange an inter-generational knowledge swap meet. The internet is great and all, but shouldn't we be down at the boat / oddfellows hall, with people under the age of 40 teaching people over the age of 40 how <some useful digital tech> works, while ppl over the age of 40 teach those of us under the age of 40 how <some useful analog tech> works?

Here I confess that I am over the age of 40, but still forget I am, and think of myself as the-kid-who-programs-the-vcr-for-his-parents circa 1985.

This is what the sea scouts was for, back in the day, right? Here in my area (silicon valley) it's been replaced with a bird refuge and a park ranger. But nobody is actually sailing or splicing or 'splaining, as far as I can tell. Sad. They used to have he be-all end-all sweetest little sea scouts boatyard/yacht basin/clubhouse (http://www.rhorii.com/PABaylands/PAKingTide2014/P1309092.JPG) imaginable, in Palo Alto-- world class. Apparently fell victim to some busybody environmentalists two generations ago, sigh. And *I* am a busybody environmentalist, and still I cringe.

There is no way, that I can figure out, how to "right click" from an iPad. I used to post photos all the time but for the last 4 years I've used an iPad exclusively and haven't posted a photo since. Ironically, it's easier to attain pics to emails, messages, Facebook, Instagram, etc, etc from a smart phone or tablet. Anybody have the answer here? Rick

When you use Photobucket you don't have to right click and copy anything. You just left click on the IMG code next to the photo and the picture is copied automatically.

You will have to right click and paste it into the Woodenboat message box, where the picture will appear as a line of code..

Hit "Preview" and the picture appears

Good stuff Jim. Do you know if Photobucket still has a problem in that if you rearrange, re-categorize your photos and albums you risk breaking the link and the photos you shared will disappear from the site you shared them to? There are 1000's of threads on WBF wherein the photos no longer exist.

I wouldn't know about photos disappearing if they are rearranged.

Lately I've become peeved with Photobucket. For years the uploaded photos remained in the order in which they were uploaded. Scrolling through the pages was like looking back along a known timeline. Recently the order seems haphazard, photos are likely to appear anywhere but where you would expect them. It's much like having pictures in a shoebox, but more trouble to sort through.

Photo taken with, posted to flickr, and displayed here all from my ipad, yes it is a giant pain in the ass.

In flickr, in your photostream, tap on the photo you want to post. Then, in the lower right hand corner there will be a downward pointing arrow with a horizontal bar underneath. Tap on that, and a menu of size options will drop down. Select the one you want by touching and holding down, and open it in a new tab. Then copy and paste the .jpg image that opens in the new tab and follow Thorne's directions from there.

That is of course what the designers of this posting program/site want, works only with multiple steps, in the right order, maybe. If it was well designed it would be user freindly/intuitive but then it is microsoft based..... The fault is the program's limitation and design, not the user's.

No, I think you have missed the point. It isnt about the forum software (which quite likely isn't Windows based), it is about the iPad being incredibly obtuse and frustrating to use in any real world environment outside of the Apple ecosystem.
I feel the same (this is posted using an iPad). Mac's may be fine machines, but this thing this is so awkward to use in so many situations that Android and Windows products aren't, that there is no way in hell I will spend a cent on another apple product to find out.
Having seen some of the bs that my kids have put up with on iPods and iPhones makes me even less likely to go there.

http://imgur.com is easy to use and doesn't require registration, if you just want to show images on here quickly.

Click "upload images" at the top

browse to your photos, or drag them to the window, then click "upload"

when it's complete, each image will have a number of code options to the right - the one you want to copy (click on it, right click, "copy") is the "BBCode (message boards and forums)" one - it will look like this

http://i.imgur.com/QDhn1G8.jpg

then paste that into your forum post at the point you want the image to show.

Using Shutterfly there is a long code to copy during the process I wont completely outline here. If the very last character, a letter I believe, is left out , it shows the pic really big.

I've been using the Google Picasa for photos but I usually end up on the desktop to copy the photos out of my Android auto backup folder into the boat album which I share. Then still need to open the photo and copy the Url into the forum post. It's certainly not a single step process. But it does work. If my thread was very busy I'd also need to upgrade my Picasa account otherwise they would limit the bandwidth or people that can view the photo...

Interested to hear how others do it and if it is any easier and simpler.

I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 10 and with that follow the new web browser «Edge». In this browser I was not able to find the URL address of pictures. Before I used Explorer and that worked just fine. Anyone who knows how to do it in “Edge”?

Thorne

Using Flickr can be a hassle, as you have to make sure the image is shared to the Public setting, then click the "View All Sizes" arrow icon before right-clicking to get the image URL.

But I've tried the Flickr Uploader to my free Flickr account, and it works quite seamlessly from several different computers. If you routinely put all new photos in a folder / directory, you just set that to auto-update to Flickr and everything copies up with Album names matched to any sub-folders you've set up. Much easier to use than Amazon's free Prime image storage system.

It's actually very easy to upload photos from Flickr using a PC

1 - open up your Flickr page in a new tab and click on the photo you want to copy - a new screen appears with your photo on a black background
2 - in the bottom right corner there are four symbols - click on the right facing arrow "Share Photo"
3 - A new screen appears with a white background - select the option for "BB Code"
4 - The URL for your photo is already highlighted - press "CTRL + C" on your keyboard to copy it (There is an option to re-size your photo)
5 - Click on the tab where you have the Wooden Boat forum reply box open, place your cursor where you want to put the photo and press "CTRL + V" to paste it ...like this:

For those of you who have been using picasa for their photo hosting, the service will be shut down over the next few months, and all photos moved to a "google photos" account.

I'm guessing, but I can't be sure, that all links to the old picasa hosted photos will cease to function. SO that means that none of you will see my photos anymore unless i go back and manually edit and update all the links...

That would put all old threads back at the top, and I'm guessing that NO ONE wants to see all that tripe again... LOL!

When you edit a post it does not come up to the top, so the tripe will go unnoticed.

OK, I'm one of the well over 40 set who needs to attend Chebacco20's (Post#10) swap meet.

What does anyone know about http://postimage.org/about.php? It reads like it could be used by the forum as 'the' place to store photos. Is it any easier or harder/better than http://imgur.com?
"Postimage.org was founded in 2004 to provide forums with an easy way to upload images for free. Postimage is a very simple, fast, reliable free image host."
Slug (http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?196952-Slug!) has been using it, and it adds a link to http://postimage.org/index.php?lang=spanish, but I find http://postimage.org/index.php?lang=english easier to read.

Half the work is done, now select the insert image icon from the tool bar on message posting box, select option 'from URL', deselect 'Retrieve remote file and reference locally'. Now paste in the space under URL and click OK.

Insert image icon is a square photo frame with a picture of tree.
