Greetings, I am looking to buy an aluminum mast for a boat I am designing. The boat is a 20 foot day sailer. The mast is currently spec'd at 29' tall with a 10' 1" boom. The boat has no back-stay and the rigging is intended to be supported with fore and side stays. I guess I was hoping to scavange a rig from a similar (perhaps slightly larger boat) and chop it down to size. Any ideas on where I might find such a beast? Am I nuts...

Thanks... Dave

I've seen them on eBay now and then, up to 40'. Good deals on sails too, unless you need one "right now"- sometimes it takes a while for the right item to come up.

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but Lattitude 38 in CA and 48 North here in Seattle often have ads for used masts.

Your message caught my eye, since a friend of mine in MA built a 15' catboat daysailer and built an aluminum collar for the mast which folds for travel-- really quite a nice trick!
jtdill@yahoo.com As for your needs, trolling boat yards and junk yards would be one idea-- might pick up one you could downsize for free.

Suggest checking with the used sail people and with the marine consignment shops. They may have.

How about buying new? By the time you locate and modify a scavenged rig there may be little difference in price. Try Dwyer in Branford CT, or metal mast in Putnam CT. I think Dwyer sells online.
