I don't think I'd have gone as close as I did to the Komodo Dragons if I'd seen this clip before visiting.

This looks like its filmed on Rinca Island, which has more Dragons than the nearby Komodo Island

Quick little critters aren't they?

Yeah... and they get a lot bigger than that. A 90kg lizard is going to give an 80 kg softie a hard time.

Anyone read Last Chance to See, by the late Douglas Adams? He devotes a chapter to the dragons.

Said that their bite was particularly nasty ... not just because of toxic proteins and anti-coagulants from glands in their mouths, but also because their mouths are truly disgustingly ripe with leftover bits of yesterday's supper. Creating a crowd-sourced biological weapon, as it were, to take down (or at least slow down) prey they only got to wound this time. So I hope the Japanese maiden is pretty fleet of foot.

I love Adams' turns of phrase; in a chapter in the same book discussing white rhinos, he describes one moving "like a nimble young tank." :D

So how do you say "hold my beer and watch this" in Japanese?

I've often wondered if T rex used the same technique

I think T Rex had more crunch to his bite. These guys just let the low grade venom and the cocktail of bacteria do the killing over a day or two.

I look at that GIF and wonder what happens when the dragon grabs the bit of meat.... does the rope break, or does the runner hit the dust. Could be interesting.

Rinca Island.....

Definitely one FOR the bucket list. It is fascinating... as is the general area... diving with Manta Rays, whirlpools in the sea, etc.

This is on Komodo Island... but if you go to either (or both) island, you get allocated a protector. These guys keep the Dragons at bay.

I don't know how the Japanese managed it... I suspect they snuck ashore at Rinca.

One of those guides got bitten a week or two ahead of my visit.

Great idea! Let's teach a top predator at a place where tourists go that chasing people results in a meal!
