Hi,

I have a quart of flat white interlux yacht enamel that I want to tint to a light tan color using colors in oil. it will be used on the inside of the hull on a cosine wherry pulling boat. I contacted interlux, and they more or less said don't do it. I figure they are just trying to sell me some more paint. HAS ANYBODY HAD EXPERIENCE with tinting this product? Can I do it? OR should I stop being cheap and just by another quart of the right color???

Thanks for your answers.

If the tinting color is for oil/alkyd paint you should be OK. Provided the paint is standard enamel NOT polyurethane.

About six years ago, I bought a case of dark green hull enamel. SWMBO decided the color should be a bit darker, and started to mix some black in until she liked the color. That was fine, but every year after we have had to try to match that mix, with, I should say, mixed results. I think the case will last until 2013, or thereabouts.

It is standard proceedure here.
Usually from a base (A or B) because the color charts are made for bases, but there can't be much shade difference between a white Interlux base and a white Interlux. Perhaps a little, but not much. Trying to guess how a colored paint would turn out is a different story.
