Three construction workers were killed Monday when scaffolding collapsed as it was being dismantled at a high-rise construction site in downtown Raleigh, N.C.The elevator-like platform fell from high up on the 11-story Charter Square building about 11 a.m.,WTVD-TV (http://abc11.com/news/injuries-reported-in-downtown-raleigh-scaffolding-collapse/569369/) Raleigh reported.
At least one other worker was seriously injured when the structure crushed a portable toilet he was in, a colleague told the News & Observer (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/counties/wake-county/article16081955.html) newspaper.
Wake County EMS spokesman Jeff Hammerstein said authorities had few details on what happened. "We don't know where they were or what they were doing," Hammerstein said of the victims. All were wearing safety harnesses.
Mike Hampton, chief operating officer for builder Choate, told the newspaper that a subcontractor, Associated Scaffolding, had been dismantling pieces -- called mast climbers -- that workers use to transport crews and materials to different positions on a building's facade.
"We are finished using it. We don't know what happened, but it occurred in the process of dismantling the climbers," Hampton said.
