I'm looking for about 300# of cheap scrap lead for internal ballast.
One local place I called wanted 69 cents/lb, which seemed high to me.
I don't care what form it's in, since I'm likely to recast it to custom shapes.
Any thoughts?

Plumbers and roofing contractors will probably have some a lot cheaper or even free. If they toss it in the dumpster along with other trash they are paying to get rid of it and will be glad to help you.

The old standby: used tire weights. Scour your local tire dealers. Don't forget Wal-Mart & Sam's Club. Tire weights are good because the extra surface area makes them melt faster than big chunks.

Look in the phone book for Metal Scrap Dealers, recycle guys etc... ask them what they are paying for scrap alum, brass, and of course what your really interested in lead. That should get you an idea what ho sale price is. Then ask if they have any for sale, and expect to pay a little over ho sale.

Sixtynine cents a pound is high. I bought 450 lbs last year (in Naples, FL) for .25 a pound, 40 lb bricks, beautiful stuff.

I'd go with the wheel weights. I used to cast my own bullets and got all i wanted and then some for free, and still can. Just takes a contact atthe local aoto repair shop / garage. Anybody that does wheel balancing. The Atachment clips and dross all float to the top when the lead is melted and then can be easily scooped off. If you wanted to get real fancy, you could get some flux and stir it in after the stuff is melted and the initial dross and mesteel clips are ladled off. This would further remove any impurities.
Good Luck

Put on your diving gear, there is a heck of a lot more than 300 lbs in sinkers around the old stone bridge in Tiverton, I know 'cause I left a few lbs there myself.

Used wheel weights are good but they probably won't be free, especially from a source that gets a lot of them. Most places sell them to scrap dealers. You'll have to tempt them with a better price. I found some of the biggest tire stores wouldn't sell them to me at all. They had contracts with the scrap guy that they didn't want to break.

The MB dealer I work for doesn't have any scrap arrangements our used weights. They go our the door and in the dumpster.
