In packing away some books that hadnt made it to the boxes yet... I came upon an old "The Century Atlas" 1912 edition printed by a John Walker and co Farringdon House Warwick Lane E.C. and edited by one J.G. Bartholomew LLD, FRGS. Etc...

Within this tome was a small advertisement for a "Commercial and library chart of the world" printed on cloth 6ft X 4ft... for the princely sum of 1 guinea...

Now trick is I wouldnt mind getting a hold of something like that!!... the 1 guinea would be a tad wrong after 90 years I guess... Somewhere around here we have a map of India that was also done on cloth... but this is also really getting on in years possumpoops granddad gave it to her when she was a travelling prior to his passing... he was given it as a tadler by his da... so that would also probably of the same vintage...

So question is are these cloth atlas maps charts still available and if so from where and what cost???

If not where would one get a hold on a world chart map atlas wall size ie: 6 X 4 min?

Is the Geographical Institute of Edinbourough still running?... at the bottom of one of the advertisements was "John Bartholomew & Co Geographical Institute Edinburgh" so Im guessing that at least at one time there was such a place operating in Scotland which I believe is where Edinburgh is... Shug??

Ideas? Thoughts? Knowledge?

Shane, Bartholomew's does still exist, and still publish maps and guides and such like, dont know that it is still in Edinburgh though? I am still trying to find info on the Foundary there and not had much luck, this should be easier though. Will not be able to get detail till Monday though.

Shug.

Shane..here's a great source for all types of maps:

http://www.mapworld.com/index.asp

30 years ago I bought a school map at a flea market for $20. It consisted of a 6' long steel tubular case which was meant to be mounted on the wall over the chalkboard. It contained 6 maps, each 5' x 6', which pulled down from the tube individually, and locked open. It closed by rolling the map back up with a spring loaded mechanism. It was my favorite set of maps, but my ex got it. :(

PS...here's a link to Bartholomews....although I don't know if it's the same one. These folks are a part of Harper Collins Publishers, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, and seem to do electronic maps:
