I am currently building Joel White's Shearwater, she is about 20% completed. I am starting to think about sails and rigging and need a book on the subject. The plans are not that comprehensive here, otherwise they are pretty good; any recommendations? Also any suggestions on a good book on "how to sail".The only other boat I built was a paddler and that was fairly straight forward.Lastly, has any one out there built this particular Shearwater; I would love to chat with them; the wrangs really gave me grief.

When I last taught sailing I had two required texts, but I only remember the title of one (but I can get you the other).

First You Have to Row a Little Boat (close enough), the author's last name is Bode (I think). A great little book.

The latest SailRite catalog lists sail kits for the Shearwater 16, which I believe is what you're working on.

For how to sail, read The Craft of Sail, by Jan Adkins. I resommend this one without reservations. See:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0802772145/qid=980883225/sr=1-1/ref=sc_b_1/105-8223776-6260740

I think the WB store sells it too.

aint the net wonderfull? Thank-you very much.
So what is an Egyptian sail?(dimesionaly it's the same as the Dacron) I think I know what a "tan bark" is,(sort of a red/brown colour)and Dacron is ovious. Since there are sail kits available for the Shearwater 16 are there hardware and/or rigging kits available too?

Egyptian is a cream colored Dacron made to look like the color of the old cotton sails.

I read Swallows and Amazons as a kid and it taught me the basic mechanics. When I got my first boat at about 10 I had a really good idea as to what was going on. You could do a lot worse .......
