Gents,
I'm looking to create a small video library for future long boat rides. It helps to pass the time, watching a dvd on the laptop, when running for several hours at a time.
Anyhow, I went to e-bay and looked up 'Band of Brothers' and got about a million hits. Most of them were from China, and I'm a bit leery about buying stuff from that far away. Also noticed that there wasn't much bidding going on for those copies, while other copies from the US or Canada, even if used, had a lot of bids.
I sure could use some tips on buying dvds over the internet, either from e-bay or a movie club.
Thanks!

Those cheap offerings are most like illegal copies and poor quality, buying that stuff deprives the copyright owners, artists and others of their share of the profits which they would use to make new movies. Buy that stuff and you would be buying stolen merchandise.

Brian, we belong to Mentura, a web-based DVD rental company. Once you belong, you list the DVDs you want and they send them to you 3-6 at a time. They have a deep playlist. Keep the disc for as long as you want; they send you the next when you send one back. Very easy, postage paid. www.mentura.com (http://www.mentura.com) Rick

Actually, many Chinese dvds are just fine (ESPECIALLY on ebay, which is well-policed)... their subtitles and menu choices may be in Chinese ... check the seller's feeback- THAT will tell the story.
I've purchased several ... for pennies on the dollar.
They come, some with Chinese labels (that are just overstocks from a mainland retailer overbuy typically), and they work just fine ... just choose the English option for language ...
Heck I just got three seasons of the Simpson's for the price of one season in the US stores.
You have protection when buying through ebay anyway ...

FWIW, DVD piracy is BIG business in China. Some of the outfits are very professional indeed, producing packaging and quality that's just about the equal of the genuine article. I've bought a few pirate copies of Japanese movies that weren't available in the US, but my conscience is always a little tender afterwards. Video quality was usually OK, although some of the subtitles were written by someone who thought they spoke English. A dead giveaway is if the DVD has no region coding ; if it says "region free" "region 0" or "all regions", it's almost certainly a pirate. Almost all legitimate Chinese releases will be either Region 3 (Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong) or Region 6 (Mainland China). Japan is Region 2. None of these will play on a standard US Region 1 DVD player, although many players can be hacked to remove region coding, and region-free players are available. Most of the Chinese DVDs on eBay are pirates.
