    the very first superbike

The SS100 prototype, referred to as 'Shop Bike' by George Brough. . .

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

outa be outlawed... if one life can be saved it would be worth it
The doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power, and oppression, is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind.
Personal failures are too important to be trusted to others.

The Curtiss V-8 motorcycle was a 269 cu in (4,410 cc) V8 engine-powered motorcycle designed and built by aviation and motorcycling pioneer Glenn Curtiss that set an unofficial land speed record of 136.36 miles per hour (219.45 km/h) on January 24, 1907.

The Curtis doesn't appear to have a transmission. I wonder how the crank shaft output transitions to the chain drive?

with engine that big, reducing throttle will be enough to lose traction anyway

I think this Flying Merkel is one of the first superbikes. the design and performance had Harley and Indian smoked for 3 years - they ending up copying them for years. Merkel later created innovative forks and suspension. If the peddles were removed - these bikes dominated the hugely popular board tracks.
