View Full Version : Wagner heat guns
My wife can get the Wagner heat guns through her work. I don't have the model # but she said it was a duel temp gun from I believe 700 degrees to 1000 degress. She said she can get these for about $20. Any experiance with these? Is that a good price. Compartivly speaking the Chicago Electric heat gun (Harbour Freight) with similar specs is $20.

I used a Wagner heat gun to strip paint off our 1961 Lyman 16 footer. I know they make better ones but the Wagner worked fine on our small boat. I think we paid 12 bucks at a garage sale so 20 bucks for a new one sounds good.

A 20 dollar Wagner puts out as much heat as one of these----> http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=201&prrfnbr=3409&outlet=
Using a heat gun to strip years of paint off an old wood boat is an art. It takes awhile to get the hang of it. The second half of the boat goes faster than the first.

I used an ~$20 Wagner gun from Lowe's to strip 30 years of paint off my Simmons Sea-Skiff 20. Used a 2" wide wood chisel to peel it off in one pass. Expected to burn it up, so bought a $20 Harbor Freight backup. Both were made in China and about identical. Wagner still fine. Resold the HF for $20 to a professional boatbuilder who is tickled with it.
The proper "peeler" is the key. Nelson Silva taught me to use the heavy chisel.
