If we could put together a big enough order we could get them from Pacific Western Timbers in Washington, otherwise I haven't been able to find anything with any great length. The George McQueston Co. has long timbers but they only sell wholesale and wouldn't let me pick.

The better building supply/lumber yards should have VG douglas fir for stair treads. This is 5/4 (1" to 1 1/16" finished) by 10" or 12" with a bull nose on one edge. The yards in my area often have them up to 18' or 20'. The price seems to vary from $6.00 to $11.00/bd. ft.

Call Downes & Reader Hardwood Co., Inc. in Stoughton, MA 800-788-5568. I bought some mahogany two months ago and they had a lift of twenty eight footers for a spar maker. I’m not sure if it was vertical grain.
Good luck,
Tom
