Hardware stores in Europe?

This coming winter I'm going to Switzerland to help install a pipe organ. Generally these installation trips involve some dealings with local lumberyards, hardware stores, and industrial suppliers.
But the guys who went over to measure the church said they couldn't find any, at least not like we have here in the states.

Has anyone here had experience with finding lumber and hardware in European cities?

It's been years since I was in Switzerland, but had no trouble finding hardware stores. Look for "Eisenwaren". Not sure what they're called in French.
