View Full Version : ISIS Al Qaeda Syria Iraq etc

From another thread, I think it deserves a thread of it's own.

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri this week delivered his first response to rival militant group Islamic State since it blitzed through Iraq and Syria this summer, erecting a de facto state the size of Belgium.

In a 55-minute video, Mr. Zawahiri announced the expansion of al Qaeda into the Indian subcontinent while denouncing Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the caliphate—or religious empire—he declared in June.

The Islamic State's shocking success has outdone that of al Qaeda's, taking more ground than any other contemporary Arab militant group in a bid to become the leader of the global jihadist movement.

Much of Mr. Zawahiri's message focused on showing al Qaeda's strength—despite its weakness in Syria and Iraq, the epicenter of global jihad.

The Islamic State's center of power is in Iraq and Syria, where it has turned on al Qaeda, forcing its commanders and militants to pledge allegiance or face death

The snowball is rolling . . .

PS Perhaps al-Qaeda is not even the second-most successful terrorist operation if taking into consideration Nigeria’s Boko Haram, which has also been expanding the territory it controls (http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2014/09/boko-haram-seize-strategic-nigerian-town-201492185035408733.html) while IS hogs the headlines.

When dogs are hungry, they eat their own!

They will grow stronger on said nourishment and then need to feed elsewhere as that supply dries up.

The Ottoman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Sultanate of Rhum, the Empire of Tebizond, the Despotates of Morea, Epirus and Dobruja....

As my mom says: "History is just one damn thing after another."

This is all good news... with multiple groups trying to hog the international media stage, they could end up expending all their energies on fighting one another.

I'm in general agreement with J of P.... all this stuff is grossly overblown.
