So, the boat plans call for 85 BF clear alaskan cedar to use as sheer clamp and kingplank on the foredeck of a mahogany speedboat. The yellow colour would contrast nicely against the red magogany. Anyway, none to be had- that I can find. M.L. Condon company said the last they had was going for $15/bf. Geez- any of you guys found a nice substitute?

Don't give up just yet. Try the guys at Easy Creek Lumber. (http://www.easycreeklumber.com/) I bought a bunch from them last year, and ended up spending about $4/bdft delivered. Give them a call or drop them an email.

Doug fir is the only inexpensive species with the same properties...but then you are talking paint....although tight CVG stock doesn't look bad varnished. But the color wouldn't be right.

If I were in Tennessee I'd be thinking about clear Black Cherry or Black Walnut or Sassafras for your application. Lotsa mills there should have rough, airdried stock for a fraction of the cost of imported Yellow Cedar.

Sassafras- Damn Bob- never thought about that. Colour would be about right although I'd probably yellow it up some. True, we have plenty in Tennessee, although I don't know how clear of knots it would be. Will check

Dale, you can also check out www.Pinecreekwood.com (http://www.Pinecreekwood.com)
they have a phone number there and they will even sell you a log if you want. I have a source on Prince of Wales Is. but I'd have to check before I give out his number. Yellow Cedar is available and is usually somewhere between $6-$8 bdft. plus shipping. Yellow Cedar is stronger than Doug Fir , not much, but DF is easier to get. Personally I love the wood and the results but hate to work with it because of the odor. Some like it but I find it offensive and borders on being toxic to me. One thought to save you some perhaps on shipping is to just buy a cant from one of those mills like pine creek or easy creek and resaw it there in your location. I've shipped logs to here from Indiana at .42 cents/lb probably more now but the overall cost of your boat won't change much even if you pay more for the wood you really want. If you have more problems getting it let me know and perhaps I can find you another source.

How 'bout Butternut, sometimes called white walnut. Nice tanish yellow color with a grain pattern just like black walnut and is native in East Tennessee. It would contrast nicely with mahagony.

The Alaskan cedar has other properties besides being 'yellow'...How's the replacement value in expansion and rot resistance??..The sheer clamp's properties seem a bit more relevant to me than deck color..Just my .02 marevidis worth

In my town there are many houses built in the 1850's that have walnut siding, columns and millwork that are still in good shape. As with most woods, don't use the sapwood of either black or white walnut exposed to the weather.

I just bought some beutiful clear AYC from an outfit called ARC wood and timbers out of the bay area Ca. 5$ a foot. It's salvaged material which makes one feel almost good about spending the money. The stuff they had in stock was 8/4. We bought out all the 6 and 8 " material but they still had loads of 4" and 10" stuff, good lengths too...out to 28' GUy named Lance runs sales...easy to work with. 415-441-7776

Kieth at Esay creek Lumber is a good guy too, and can put his hands on some nice timber but the prices he had were 6-7/ft and no salvage in stock
