Dave, you're right, I could. I have made a couple of larger ones. Just thought I might save a little time. (I know, weak excuse). They are for the boatbuilding school.

Boatbuilding School?
Seems like a great excuse to introduce the students to how to make a wooden plane.
The Krenov method is very easy and makes a decent plane, IMOOP that is.

Okay Dave. I give up. You are inexorable and bound and determined to make me do the RIGHT THING. I have a baulk of bubinga that's been lying around for some time, and somewhere in that chunk are two nice mast planes.

Dave ... I have often thought of making a mast plane, but did not know where to start ... what's the Krenov method and where could I go to learn more?

Krenov shows how in one of his books or go to the College of the Redwoods site and look for School of Woodworking and further I believe Ron Hock a noted plane iron maker has a booklet on how to.
This should get you started.

If you've got enough for 2 in that lump of wood, you oughta make a right-hand and a left-hand one.

Or, you could use a straight plane to turn a 4-sided mast into an 8-sided one, into a 16-sided one...and then one of those sandpaper loops on an electric drill to take off the last polygonal edges.
On the other hand, teaching the students to make mast planes would be a fine thing too.....
