for a mate……but here’s the challenge: I haven’t seen him for a few years so really have no idea what his interests are…..which is making this really quite difficult.

He’s not particularly practical.

He works long hours and has a young child (to his gorgeous second wife), so is likely to have very few hobbies at the moment by the time he spends time with his family outside of work.

He likes his wine and is a bit of a connoisseur but works in the hospitality industry at a very senior level, so the regular easy option of a nice bottle of plonk is going to be pretty ho-hum and unlikely to be as good as anything that he deals with at work anyway.
So I’m looking for unique or fun ideas that you’d not otherwise think to buy for yourself…..any ideas???

Take him to a bar or the couple out to dinner. Your friendship is the best gift.

This book is wonderful:

(Ask his wife if he's got it.)

Another idea is a really good set of wine glasses (Riedel, Spiegelau, etc.) designed for his favourite (this is for Shiraz):

Or a tasting set, usually four glasses of different shape.

Not a bad idea Phil...or an MG

Or perhaps a block of land in Ireland: http://shop.gifts.com/products/a-plot-of-land-in-ireland?ref=90de55655d62477b8eed0acbadf2925b

There is a place in Perth that does MGBs. Don't recall their name. I'd be interested to know their price if you pursue it.
