View Full Version : Spira Oysterman build

07-13-2014, 07:43 PM
Name is Tony, last spring I bought plans for an oysterman and started building. I picked the boat based on having no previous boat building experience and the fact I already have a 15hp motor. Ok first mistake I made......this will be cheap and fast to build ..........hahahahahahahahahahahahaha said the building gods. Well anyway I am hopefully about 1-2 weeks away from launch( again could be a huge joke on my behalf ).

There were definitely some learning curves involved with the build. I am trying to up load the pics from my phone to photobucket, since that's the only reason people read these things.

Will be back later , but don't hold your breath , trying to upload ASAP

Your basic flat-bottomed dory skiff. I imagine you'll get a lot of use out of this stout little beast.

I will be looking forward to it. I just ordered a set of plans for a Mid Size Panga From Jeff Spira. As I am also another person that fell on there head and decided that they wished to build a boat. But some good people on this forum did try and talk me out of it. :)

So here's a few pic that are more up to date, I will try to put together a time line of the build but it only use the phone for pictures(mistake)

Here2 Looking Good.

On the Second Picture are those False Ribs added or to say not on the plans? And did you feel you needed those for extra support of the flooring?

07-14-2014, 11:44 AM
Yes, the floor was going to be 5/4 Doug fir , but the 11 pieces weighed a ton so I decided that 3/4 flood w a few extra 2x4's would be lighter. I just glued them all the way across and they are screwed down to the keelson

Also one thing I will say is that I wish I would have scarfed all the plywood instead of the butt blocks, on the starboard side the joint kinda snapped and it was ****ty looking but I've been able to hide it I think with the gunnel

Here2 I just wished to say Thank You Again. I just received my Plans on the New 16' Robalo (Panga) from Jeff Spira or Spira International. And since I wish to make it a bit longer I need to space the ribs from the as set 20" Spacing to 24" spacing to make it about 17.5'. and due to my weight and my Brother I will add extra the extra floor braces as you did. But with this before hand knowledge that you were so nice to let us in on I will cut them to fit like the ribs. Or to say I will try to lol.

Please by all means keep us updated on your build.

07-17-2014, 08:59 AM
Ya I originally bought 5/4 Doug fir and it didn't deflect much between what I'm going to say is 24" centers, but the weight just seem to much. Also I left the ends of the extra supports square but that was just me . I'm getting closer to having all my old pictures up loaded from my phone to the bucket so I can give you the fast track build. I put a second layer of epoxy on the bow cover and rail tops last night so a tyvek suit and some sanding are in order for tonight.

Heres se a question for you more experienced builders. I want to have my floor and rub rails finished bright(or probably satin varnish) but I want to stain them since it's just fir, can I use say a product like minwax, then just varnish over it?

thanks for all the comments

Also here's another little beater I've been helping with. Chris craft single cabin 31' think it's a 1938.

that fir will darken nicely out in the sunshine all on its own. How dark did you want to get?

David G
07-17-2014, 09:09 AM
Nothing wrong with 'just fir'. No need to stain, and I wouldn't want to anyway. Not a huge deal, but the sole is an area likely to wear thru. If you wear into the stain, it'll be harder to bring it back gracefully. Just varnish - if varnish is what you desire.

I'm thinking early american , and that's how dark the boss(wife ) wants it. Later tonight the express build picture documentary!!

So here's a trick that I made up re building an aluminum boat for duck hunting/fishing. I take the through hull grind it within 1/4" of the transom, then take a small hammer , I use a sheet metal hammer a trim hammer would work , and start the roll out word with so e taps inside toward out. Then take a half inch diameter bolt and some stout washers and just wrench down to get the roll finished. Also I put epoxy on the brass through hull before the crimping

A 1/2 to 3/4 keel strip of some stout creosote-embedded whatever wood would be nice, a brass strip on top of it nicer.
Thats a down-home build, you have done wonders with simple materials. No need to complicate it with epoxy-fillets(though they are nice at stopping water and add strength), 2-part primers ( I hate to don a respirator but Interlux 2-part high build primers are worth it to me when I need to seal rough plywood), and fancy hardware(your boat is crying out for Noble Fittings, but we all know these aren't cheap. This design would lend itself to a little larger cleats than normal, I like to take old chromed(?) hardware and strip it down, usually has a bronze base that can be polished. Of course others have discovered this and so it is becoming harder to find.

Great thread and build. Am thinking of the Caladesi for my next build and am wondering about the floor boards. What happens when you drop something that falls through the spaces? Will you have easily removable sections? I am thinking of a center console for mine, what are your plans for the helm? Tiller steer or?

I have been wondering the same thing lol. But from what I have noticed is that all of the planks are screwed down. So I do not think it would be hard to remove them but it sure would not be easy peasy.

But then again with most things there are upsides and downsides. For the Upside of the Planked floor is they look good and let water and other small debris pass through and can easily be drained with a drain plug or bilge pump. And as you mentioned the downside is if you drop something threw the slats then be handy with a battery powered electric drill to remove the item depending on how bad you need it at the time. :)

But this is just from a Layman. :)

07-20-2014, 01:35 PM
Yes dropping something in the floor could be an issue but I will just throw that person over board. No really there's a lot of room at the edges to fit a hand ,or a little grabber/magnet. I didn't want a plywood floor to have to glass in, have to worry about rot, and the weight of all that added to the hull. I am just using a 15hp tiller that you can see in the background of a few pictures.

keep it coming , at work today to make more money for other boat material!

Also for the cleats I bought some 2x2 oak to try my hand at making some cleats out of as large as possible and maybe just finishing them w pine tar or oil since I won't be able to match what ever I do with rub rail and decking. Thoughts?

Was a plywood floor one of the options in the plans?

07-20-2014, 08:35 PM
No real floor involved in the plans. Just a few suggested ideas in his ply on frame e book

You pretty much just have plans to build the Hull. After that it is up to the builder on how he wishes to finish the boat. He does show ideas such as a Pilot House,Console and pictures of what others have done. But I feel a search on this forum and on the net will give lots of basic ideas. At least as far as I have gathered and I have only scratched the surface.

Here is the E Book. http://spirainternational.com/downloads/PlyOnFrameManual.pdf

Again Here2 Great Job and looking forward to viewing the project. :)

Hey how do you feel about just using a normal deck/fence stain on the floors and rub rails?

thanks for the help

Well guys and gals, been a while but she sits on trailer in the drive waiting to be launched. I ended up using Olympic maximum stain and sealer all in one job for the floor and rails. Used interlux anti skid additive for topside.
The follies so far was motor barely fits on transom it's almost to thick! We'll here she is all gussied up .

Looking very nice so far. What are your plans for seats, thwarts, center console, rod holders, helipad, etc. ???

08-14-2014, 08:30 PM
Jester, not sure about the 15 being satisfactory but Jeff says a 9.9 will move it and I think a 30 she'll fly, and I already had the motor from the purchase of my Starcraft I have in Manistee.

David , as of now, because of the shortish season we have (and duck and deer hunting is coming along fast ) I will just be using coolers as seats. After this year I will put the boat back inside and think the rear will get a Doug fir bench in same boards I used on floor. Not sure about front if I do the rear bench , but my other idea would be something similar to this skiff

thanks for for the remarks guys

UPDATE! She floats!we finally launched her and got her on the boat lift Sunday morning . I didn't run a app on the lee side of the island, but ran it on the choppy side and she got up to 14.2 with two 180lb men in the boat. The hull is definitely tippier than I expected but no worse than say a 14 aluminum row boat. Here's a video of the launch and a friend has some pictures just waiting for them. Thanks for all the responses. Next build I think I'll head into a more traditional lap strake row boat, Just not sure which one yet. Then after that a 28-32' lobster boat. Well ok I want , should I say WANT a lobster boat bad and building is probably the hard way to do it but for now I'll just us the two boats it have.

thanks again

cAnt get video up :(. Will see what I can do

Also Saturday while bumming around the house I turned my old gate into some seating

Great to hear that you did not have to Swim. :)

Kinda odd to hear about the Tippy part but maybe you are just not used to how the boat handles as of yet? And almost 1 MPH for 1 HP does not sound all that bad. Big Congrats. :)

Well after a two year hiatus the boat is about to be launched for the second season, skipped last year because my wife gave birth two our twins(get it two!?) . It needed a good cleaning and I refinished the deck/sole again. Gave her some nav lights and have sonar gps that may or may not go on it. I'll get an updated picture later but just figured I'd check in

Thanks , she's in the water, well on a lift. I put here in before Memorial Day to beat the ramp traffic and then the feed to power my friends dock took a crap so I haven't used her since. Called today and said it should be good by this weekend so if so I'll take her for a spin and get some pictures.
