I've been thinking of adding some lead ballast to my Whilly boat. Does anyone know of a source for lead in the Philadelphia area?

The usual suspects are used tire weights from tire stores. You can pound them into a lump or melt them into a lump. Good luck.

Getting the lead out shortly in Texas. :D

Call all the scrap dealers. They sell it to someone, may as well be you.

Tire stores ! Sometimes free. Several threads discussing the "cleaning" of this lead. Heat and ladle out the debris and form purer ingots to work with later. DanO down in MA did a great job forming stacking ingots. I think I will copy his idea. It really looked slick !

Hi Eric:
One thing you can do to get the lead clean is after you have melted down is add a little Bee's wax to it STIR it . It will bring all the impurities to the top and just scoop them out, a trick I learned years ago when reloading for my muzzle-loaders if you want it real hard add some Linell type metal to it.

From what I hear, in Philly you can pretty much just sweep lead up off the sidewalks in some neighborhoods... Try a boatyard. When yards chainsaw up an old wooden boat, they save the lead keel to sell for scrap. But sometimes you can find odd chunks lying around.

A plumber friend of mine gives me some occasionally . Old lead traps usually, sometimes pipe. Roofers sometimes replace lead flashing around chimneys. I've scored some that way, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try the tire stores first.
